Question 5
How did we attract/address our audience?
We have annotated our final film on youtube so that it answers question 5.
You must watch the film on youtube to receive the annotations.
After various research into our influences such as Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, I have made the decision that we should set our target audience as males aged 18-40, who are interested in action packed crime thrillers. I believe that film could also prove successful with females of the same age group too.
We used our characters too attract our target audience, as we feel by choosing characters who are supposed to be 30-40 years of age ( we had trouble casting characters actually of this age group. ) we are reaching out to our target audience, as they will be able to relate to the characters. We also made one of our characters more aggressive, as we felt that by doing this it may relate to our audience who may either be similar or idolize this kind of character. I think another way we could attract our target audience is by perhaps for the actual movie, casting actors that have a "history" in these sorts of films, such as Bruce Willis or Jason Statham. By doing this it will perhaps attract an people who are familiar or fans of these actors past films.
Our inclusion of a bank robbery scene I feel is crucial to making the film a hit with the target audience, if you look at other films in the genre of our film, it seems to be a recurring theme to have some sort of robbery or crime. I feel this is important as it sets up the story and provides action, which I feel our target audience are going to be fans of.
Question 4
Who would be the audience of your media product?
My colleague was responsible for the answering of this question.
Here is our slideshow for question 4 about target audiences.
Question 3
Pitch to Miramax film studio
I extremely excited to pitch my project to your institution, our film is set to be the huge blockbuster success of summer 2012. As you have produced similar films to our current project, fantastic films such as reservoir dogs, pulp fiction and No country for old men. We have carefully decided you can provide with the correct guidance and facilities to make our film a huge blockbuster success as your company is so adept at doing.
Our current project is called Infinite Payback and is of a similar kin to past superstar movies such as Pulp Fiction, we have taken inspiration from Quentin Tarentino, a director of whom your company is very familiar with. Our project is quite similar to other movies Tarentino and yourselves have produced and this played a key role in deciding to pitch our film to your institution, as we felt that they could provide us with the correct budget and guidance to make the film as effective as is possible. I have estimated that our budget will be similar to that of Pulp fictions which was $8.5 million, as we will require quite a significant amount SFX as we are planning a crime thriller with various action scenes. These action scenes however will help boost the films revenue significantly.
The film will be an 18 as there are quite violent scenes, making it inappropriate for younger viewers, we are setting our target audience as 18-40 year olds as this will probably be the ages most appreciative of the films nature. We are aware that setting the films age to an 18 will limit our audience somewhat but we are confident it can still be a success alike other 18 films such as our inspiration Pulp Fiction, No country for old men and Reservior dogs.
Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social group?
We have tried to represent our certain social groups through a variety of mediums, one of which being the age of our characters. Our two main characters are both middle aged males, I believe this helps to represent our target audience of 18-40 year olds, by giving our film a more mature feeling. Other films similar our own have also used male middle aged main characters such as Pulp fiction, No country for old men and Reservoir dogs.
Another way we have represented social groups is through our main characters personalities, they are both "tough guys". I believe by giving our characters this personality it will appeal and perhaps represent our target audience. There are various examples of tough guys in action and crime thrillers such as Samuel L Jacksons character in pulp fiction "Jules Winnfield", the tough guy is almost a pivotal part in a crime thriller as he is often percieved as the hero.
We have used music in our titles, I believe the music used is very representative of social groups. The music used is calm and non intrusive which conflicts greatly with the scenes unfolding on screen, it is almost ironic as there is music we would associate with peacefulness playing over images of violence. I feel this is representative of our main character who is clearly a Psychopath, as he smiles whilst inflicting pain upon the cashier in the bank.
Camerawork is also effective in representation, as you can see above our character is in a mid shot of him smiling. The fact that he smiles in the situation at hand shows what kind of person he is, which is obviously a twisted man. I believe that the shot represents that violence is something that will shock and entertain our audience, and perhaps is representative of our target audience.

Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge and conventions of real media products?
We have developed our conventions by adding clear stereotypical conventions of action films such as we had scenes typical of crime thrillers such as we had a bank robbery scene, this is a typical occurrence in a crime thrillers.
We also followed a convention of Quentin Tarentino films by starting our film off around a table which is similar to Reservior Dogs and Pulp Fiction, also our two main characters are discussing there plan to stage a robbery which is also similar to Pulp Fiction. I feel by following the conventions set by our inspiration Tarentino we will find it easier to reach our goals which is an opening sequence which fits our genre of crime thriller.
Another way we developed a convention was through costume, one of our characters is wearing a costume very similar to that of some characters in reservoir dogs.I feel this helps not only makes our film more believable, but will also give the audience an idea of what the character is like.
As you can see in these two screenshots the characters are wearing similar clothing, most importantly the sunglasses, which are an iconic accessory to gangsters and criminals in movies.
We used sound to develop upon our conventions, we used a calm unintrusive song during the opening sequence, similar to that of reservoir dogs. I feel that song played in the crime thriller genre are usually of a calm nature to almost, level out with the action on screen. There is also an ironic nature to this, as it makes you relate calmness with the violence on screen perhaps giving an insight into a characters psychotic personality.
Another way we followed conventions was through our titles, we used titles similar to that which is found in Pulp fiction and Reservoir dogs, as there title scenes are quite simple we have followed this convention. By keeping our titles simple we have followed in the example set by our inspirations, I feel they have made there titles simple as too not make there films too overblown and unsophisticated.
